What You’ll Learn

Trauma informed care is a federal requirement for skilled nursing facilities. The MDS Coordinator is in a unique position to facilitate trauma informed care and maintain your facility’s compliance with this regulation. Surveys have indicated that as many as 1 in every 4 households experiences domestic violence. Some sources indicate that as many as 20 people experience intimate partner violence per minute in the United States. Additionally, natural disasters and life-threatening illnesses can also cause debilitating trauma responses in residents. Individuals that come to our facilities with a history of any type of trauma is at risk for complex care, agitation, increased behaviors, impaired sleep, pseudo hallucinations, and depression. Attendees will learn how to care for patients with trauma responses using the MDS/RAI process as the basis for assessment. Do you know who in your facility has had trauma? Does your interdisciplinary team know how to assess for trauma?

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe trauma informed care and how it relates to the MDS
  2. Understand what sections of the MDS indicate a need for further assessments
  3. Recognize where to obtain and how to use trauma symptom assessment tools
  4. Utilize trauma assessment tools in CAA writing and care planning
  5. Review how this process will maintain regulatory excellence in your facility
